Free Course Placements
North-South Ecology Ltd offers a free course place to one individual on each of our courses (listed below). The free placement is offered to recent graduates who are from either an underrepresented background in the ecology/environmental sector and/or recent graduates who are from low income backgrounds. These placements are available to those who are seeking a career in this sector and who are not currently in full time permanent employment (in the environment sector). Introduction to Bat Ecology and Surveying Buildings
Date: 14th May 2026
Cost: £110 (Incl VAT)
Location: Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales
This one day course will provide an introduction to surveying buildings for roosting bats. We will visit a known roost site for various species during the course and include a theory session on bat ecology, survey techniques and legislation.
Itinerary:
Morning: Classroom session covering legislation, bat ecology and building terminology.
Afternoon: Practical building inspection site visit. Participants will take part in a guided preliminary roost assessment survey with course leaders followed by the opportunity to undertake a PRA survey on a building individually.
Suitable for early career ecologists, graduates and anyone looking to learn more about bats.
Introduction to Bat Emergence Surveys (Buildings)
Date: 14th May 2026
Cost: £60 (Incl VAT)
Location: Vale of Glamorgan, South Wales
This evening course will provide an introduction to undertaking bat emergence surveys of buildings. There will be the opportunity to learn and use a range of bat detectors and night vision cameras (including thermal imaging and infrared cameras). We will discuss the pros and cons of different detectors and cameras. You will learn how to plan an emergence survey, record data and use a wide variety of equipment.
Please bring appropriate footwear, warm clothes, hand torch and head torch and lunch. If you have your own endoscope, please bring with you.

Introduction to Bat Ecology and Surveying Trees
Date: 15th May 2026
Cost: £110 (Incl VAT)
Location: Vale of Glamorgan & Bridgend, South Wales
This one day course will provide an introduction to bat ecology and survey methods for tree dwelling bats. Classroom sessions will cover legislation, bat ecology and survey methods followed by a field visit to undertake surveys of tree features. We will visit known tree roosts for a variety of species.
Please bring appropriate footwear, warm clothes, hand torch and head torch and lunch. If you have your own endoscope, please bring with you.
