Free Course Placements

North-South Ecology Ltd offers a free course place to one individual on each of our courses (listed below). The free placement is offered to recent graduates who are from either an underrepresented background in the ecology/environmental sector and/or recent graduates who are from low income backgrounds. These placements are available to those who are seeking a career in this sector and who are not currently in full time permanent employment (in the environment sector). If you feel you meet these criteria, please consider applying for a free placement by dropping us an email at northsouthecology@gmail.com.

Introduction to Bat Ecology and Surveying Buildings

Date: 10th April 2025

Cost: £95 (Incl VAT)

Location: Vale of Glamorgan

This one day course will provide an introduction to surveying buildings for roosting bats. We will visit a known roost site for various species during the course and include a theory session on bat ecology, survey techniques and legislation.

Itinerary:

AM: Theory session (Vale of Glamorgan)

PM: Building Inspection Visit (Vale of Glamorgan)

Suitable for early career ecologists, graduates and anyone looking to learn more about bats.

Introduction to Surveying Trees for Bats

Date: 11th April 2025

Cost: £95 (Incl VAT)

Location: VOG and Bridgend

This one day course will provide an introduction to surveying trees for roosting bats. We will visit known tree roosts for various species during the course. You will learn how to use an endoscope effectively to find bats/evidence of bats in trees.

Itinerary:

AM: Theory Session (Vale of Glamorgan)

PM: Field Visit (Bridgend)

You will need to be physically fit as we will be walking through woodland. Please bring appropriate footwear, warm clothes, hand torch and head torch and lunch. If you have your own endoscope, please bring with you.

Suitable for: Early career ecologists, graduates and anyone looking to learn more about bats.

Introduction to Great Crested Newt Ecology and Surveying

Date: 12th-13th May 2025

Cost: £95 (Incl VAT)

Location: Vale of Glamorgan

Join us on this course to learn all about the ecology of the rare great crested newt. This course will include theory sessions covering ecology, legislation and identification as well as field surveys in the afternoon/evening using netting, bottle trapping and torching. This includes a morning session to collect the bottle traps. There will be the opportunity to see and handle newt species.

12th afternoon: Theory session

12th evening: Field visit

13th morning only: Field visit

Suitable for: Early career ecologists, graduates and anyone looking to learn more about newts.

Introduction to UK Reptile Ecology and Survey

Date: 13th May 2024

Cost: £95 (Incl VAT)

Location: Vale of Glamorgan

Join us on this one day course and learn all about UK reptile species, their ecology and how to survey for them. This course includes theory sessions covering legislation, identification and ecology. It will include a practical field visit to undertake a reptile survey. Opportunities to see and/or handle species such as slow worm and grass snake may be possible depending on what we find on the day.

Suitable for: Early career ecologists, graduates and anyone looking to learn more about reptiles.
